Remember the days of chalk and blackboards? Not something you will see in the modern day classroom!

Modern schools have embraced change, adopting interactive whiteboards to enhance active learning.

Is it not time we did the same when it comes to desks?

Sitting has been the norm in schools for decades, but research is showing us that as with adults in the office environment movement should be encouraged in our everyday learning/working. The focus as been on the office, but we should be introducing this into the classroom.

What’s wrong with sitting?

Numerous studies have documented health problems related to sitting too much, including the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and obesity.

James Levine, an author and researcher at the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University, said getting kids to move more during the school day helps both their bodies and brains. Some research suggests test scores increase by 10 to 15 percent.

“Their scores are better, their attention is better, their specific skill development is better,”

Levine said. “If that is the case, it is therefore self-evident that this has to be the future.”

British Children said to be the least active

British children are currently among the lease active in the world. The rankings, produced by a global alliance of health experts, show the UK lagging far behind a host of countries.

How can standing help with health

Pupils at the Vallecito Elementary School in San Rafael, California took part in trialling standing desks and now nearly every classroom has standing desks and the teachers noticed the difference.

Studies and Research

Research by the University of Minnesota has shown that pupils using a standing desk burn 350 calories more than sitting through the day.

Desks such as the AlphaBetter Desk® enable schools to tackle these issues and create an active classroom environment. They are proven to:

  • facilitate focus
  • burn more calories
  • empower pupils to live healthier and more productive lives

Small changes make a big difference

Simple changes to challenge traditions can have a huge impact on health.

Embracing change in this area of education, just as schools have embraced digital change in so many other aspects of learning, enables them to equip pupils both physically and mentally for the future.
